Grape Varieties

THE SOMONTANO DESIGNATION OF ORIGIN

HAS 15 GRAPE VARIETIES, BOTH LOCAL AND FOREIGN, CULTIVATED ON OVER 4,000 HECTARES. THESE ARE THE RAW MATERIAL FROM WHICH EXCELLENT WINES ARE MADE.

Cabernet-Sauvignon
Cabernet Sauvignon is synonymous with classy wines. Its deep colour and high tannin content grant it exception conditions for aging.
Merlot
A versatile grape that results in reds to be drunk young with predominant floral and fruity notes, as well as wines that reach maturity after a long period of aging.
Tempranillo
An intense black berry defines this variety that produces wines with delicate fruity aromas.
Syrah
This variety gives rise to sumptuous, vigorous, powerful wines full of body and with a silky mouth feel. They tend to have very pleasant aromas of violets, coconut, figs, game meats, lead, truffle, spices and mint.
Red Grenache
From the Mediterranean region, Grenache is an exquisite variety for the production of wines with a mild, fruity palate.
Moristel
This variety is indigenous to the zone and gives the wines of Somontano the character, personality and the uniqueness that a Designation of Origin must have.
Parraleta
Its wines have notable colour, good acidity and an aromatic personality.
Pinot Noir
An elegant variety, the best Pinots are born of grapes that only grow in mild climates in calcareous or clayey-calcareous soils.
Chardonnay
This variety results in elegant wines with unmistakable aromas. It is the queen of the whites in the D.O. and its aromatic expressiveness can be experienced in many Somontano white wines.
Gewürztraminer
With an expansive and exuberant range of aromas, Gewürztraminer grapes result in wines of unmistakable personality with an excellent evolution in the bottle.
Macabeo
The Macabeo grape is one of the traditional varieties in the wines produced in the Designation of Origin and promises dry, fruity whites.
Sauvignon Blanc
This white variety with small, golden fruit is the basis for excellent white wines with aromas that evoke honey, cake, asparagus and pink grapefruit. Its marked acidity and big personality come through in the mouth.
White Grenache
It results in wines in which fruit and freshness predominate in the nose and mouth. Its colour tones with different nuances of yellow complement aromas of ripe fruit and completely original smooth, warm flavours.
Riesling
This white grape from central Europe expresses the terroir from which it comes perfectly without losing its own identity. It results in fruity, fresh and floral wines with notable acidity.
Alcañón
It has a colour and body that gives its wine that romantic touch depending on how long it is allowed to ferment. It results in a wine with a delicate flavour and a pale straw yellow colour with notes of green.
